Closed Circuit Television (CCTV).
The range of CCTV equipment is now so vast that there is practically no way of providing comprehensive details of more than just a drop in the ocean.
Equipment now ranges from very simple monochrome cameras and monitors, right up to full function cameras with pan/tilt/zoom capabilities that can be remotely operated - even over the internet. Image recording can be by using the type of video cassette recorder (VCR) that most of us are familiar with, or by Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) which record images onto a computer type hard disc. Where incidents are required for evidence purposes, a DVD can be burnt directly from the DVR and that incident can then be replayed wherever required. Readily available DVRs can provide multi-camera recording for up to 60 days before the disk starts being written over again. We have recently provided a CCTV system for use on a research vessel in the Arctic. The cameras had to be able to withstand extremes of temperature and the units that we provided will function down to -40 degrees celsius!
CCTV can also be fully integrated into access control systems to provide full evidence of exactly who was using their card to gain access through a door at a particular time, or even more importantly - who might have been using someone else's card! To give you an idea of the power and scope of CCTV, please click one of the following links. The first link will take you to a real-time view from a camera that is set up to view part of Oxford City Centre. Link number 2 will take you straight to a camera that you can control via the internet. This camera is on Exmouth seafront and you can pan, tilt and zoom it (with some restrictions so you can't zoom in on any topless sunbathers!). You may need to queue for your turn to control it but you don't usually have to wait very long. This just gives an idea of the range of functions and capability of CCTV today.
